With unseasoned wood we face a lot of issues, such as difficulty to light it, since it holds a lot of moisture content. A lot of energy gets wasted to first remove the moisture from the wood before it can actually burn properly. This is one of the primary reasons why it is always better to go for well-seasoned wood.
By seasoning firewood over time, it allows for the moisture to evaporate and the wood to fully dry out, ensuring that the fire does not burn out quicker than expected. Using seasoned firewood is also more beneficial for the environment. Unseasoned wood produces a lot of smoke which can accumulate in your chimney and eventually affect your health.
Seasoned firewood is easier to maintain since it is cleaner with not much ash and dust. Your stove or fireplace will remain cleaner and without any black residue on the walls.
How do you know if wood has been seasoned?
- Looks – Seasoned wood is usually a pale colour and has some cracks and the bark can be made loose very easily.
- Weight – Seasoned wood is lighter compared to unseasoned wood.
- Sound – Seasoned wood makes a knocking sound that is quite clear.
